The role of the railway in a future multi-modal transport network

A senior lecturer in Transport Economics at the University of Johannesburg, Vaughan Mostert, lectures for a few weeks each year on rail issues. He has sent us a 27-odd page document that he uses as part of the lecture notes. It is based on a talk given at an Africa Rail conference some years back, and he updates some of the figures each year. Towards the end of the document are some figures relating to branch lines and steam locos.
