Transnet cancel Diesel Tender

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

Two years ago Transnet issued a tender or the supply of 212 main-line diesel-electric locomotives and Electromotive Diesel (EMD) was named preferred bidder for a contract estimated to be worth R6 billion.

Negotiations with EMD have been on-going, but it has been announced now that the talks have been discontinued.

A new tender has now been invited for the supply of 100 locos from three nominated OEMs - identity not disclosed!

How does this solve the motive power crisis? It will take about three years to build these locos. Can the 33's last that long?
