Queston about the Shosholoza Meyl

Post by allanroy »

Sorry if this is in the wrong place as I am not sure under which section to put it.
I sent a mail to the Shosholoza Meyl central reservations to get prices. Below is the reply I got. The Shosholoza Meyl has two classes namely Tourist and Economy, what I dont understand is why these classes have different departure and arrival times in both directions, surely its all one train

Thank you for your email, the train from CPT-JNB the Tourist class (sleeper accommodation) fare is currently R570.00 & Economy class (sitter accommodation) fare is R300.00 per adult single, children 0-9 yrs pays 50% of the fare. All return trips are double the fare. Bookings open 90 days in advance, please email us closer to the dates.

Tourist Class JNB-CPT Frequency: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Departure time is 10h30am, arriving the next day at 12h40pm.

CPT-JNB Frequency: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Departure time is 12h30pm, arriving the next afternoon at 15h18pm.

Economy Class Frequency everyday on both directions.

JNB-CPT departure time is 12h30pm arriving the next afternoon at 15h30pm.
CPT-JNB departure time is 10h00am arriving the next day at 12h16pm.

To transport a motor vehicle between Cape Town to Johannesburg and the return small cars not higher than 1,49m fare is currently R1960.00 single way and cars higher than that but no exceeding 1,90m (4x4) fare is R2660.00 single way. All return trips are double the fare.

Allan, as far as I know these are now completely separate trains. "Tourist" is the sleeper train, "Economy" is sitting only.

I'll move this thread into the "South Africa - Railway News" forum.

The economy leaves CT at 10am daily. The Tourist departs CT at 12h30. The Tourist is the 4 and 2 sleeper compartments with full dinning facilities, bar and carries cars. These trains have their own generator just like Premier Classe. The Economy is mostly sitter. I have seen two sleeper coaches on the train. It has a kitchen car and thats about it. Traveling time and stopping points about the same for both. The Tourist runs on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. If you travel Monday and Wednesday with the Tourist it is cheaper. Your price listing above must have been over Easter as the non Holiday periods rate is R390 for midweek and R430.00 for Friday and Sunday. This trains is comfortable and safe.
