A train derailed in Liverpool stranding dozens of passengers and causing disruption to services.

The incident happened at Olive Mount junction, near Broadgreen station, on Thursday night.

Fire crews attended the scene and led 39 passengers to safety along the railway line back to the station.

One person suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Services between Liverpool and Preston, Wigan and Manchester are all affected.

The front wheels of the train, which was travelling from Blackpool to Liverpool, derailed at about 2100 BST.

Three crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, including a specialist search and rescue team, attended the incident.

Two wheels of the 1937 Blackpool to Liverpool service derailed near Broad Green station in Liverpool at about 2100 on 11 June.

Passengers are advised to check with train operators before travelling on Friday morning.

Delays of up to 60 minutes were being predicted for Northern Rail services.

A Northern Rail spokesperson said: "All 39 passengers on the train were escorted on foot to Broad Green station and taken to their destinations by coach and taxi.

"One customer was taken to hospital suffering from suspected whiplash.

"An investigation into the cause of the incident has started and replacement bus services are operating."

Trains between Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street were not running on Friday morning.

Services to Liverpool Lime Street from Manchester Victoria and Wigan North Western were stopping at Huyton.

Trains between Blackpool North and Liverpool Lime Street were only running to Wigan North Western.
