Hi Greg

Thanks for the photos and for sharing your find.

I used to see these quite often and even have an old Dbn postcard of the Harbour yard showing rows of V-8s.

Interesting to know if more of these, besides this one have survived ?

The irony is that there are probably more Lima V8's around today than the real thing. I hope some of them get preserved because they are peculiar to our country as those odd caboose vehicles they had in the US.

Hi Derek

Fully agree with you.
There were some V-8s that were "converted" to V-12 where the only part left was the Guards section and the rest was scrapped.

See following link:
http://grela.rrpicturearchives.net/show ... ?id=624603

According to the number range 90 100 018 to 90 101 200 ,this type would be over 1000 units.
This photo of Greg shows the original V-8 and even in that state it should be preserved. I know of two V-7s --one in Umgeni Steam Railway and the other in Sandstone but no V-8 have been preserved. The way she is in even TFR would donate her as they would not make money out of her in an auction.

She has more value to the railway history of SA than the coffers of TFR.

Who would they donate her to? surely not sanrasm? That vehicle will just end up going vrot and somebody will make a fire in it and voila... V8 = no more.
I am afraid V8's are going to become just another part of our past that is going to slip away.

I do not expect SANRASM to get it. I like my trains too much and my heart bleeds for those already there.

Two ways for her to be saved:

USR the local group who may or not take her.....I would respect their decision.

the second is SIA or Sandstone they have done a lot to get much saved and if this V-8 is a sole survivor they should be made aware of her situation.

This if no one else is interested in her.

Cheers

Hi

This ones number is 90 039 975, they talking about scrapping this (and a DZ coupled to it) for years now, but nothing as yet.
A bonus is that TFR have not attached those "Tags" like they have put on all their rolling stock, so anyone can scoop it if you get the bearings, brakes done etc.
Would be awesome if anybody who has cash to get this sorted!, getting it roadworthy would be the easiest part, getting it restored is the big $$$$'s

May I suggest that you contact Steam-in-action to at least get it saved from scrapping and transferred to USR/FOTR/RS/SHT?
