myCiti bus service to be suspended

Post by Luca Lategan »

Although not railway related, but certainly public transport important.

News just in is that the myCiti bus service in the Cape Town CBD will be suspended as of tomorrow. Reason stated is that "it didn't prove as popular as initialy anticipated with Capetonians."

Have a look at this page for more information regarding the service: Cape Town transport gets a new name and look – MYCiTi.

Having had a go on the system myself, I found it slow and not cheap. A ride from the civic centre bus station to Orange street took almost 20 minutes, if you take into account the time taken to walk from the rail station plus time wasted at the bus station it will be faster to walk. As the busses shares the busy, narrow city streets with other traffic, rides becomes a constant start-stop affair.

Good bye to a good idea with a lot of shortcomings...

I read on iol that the service from Civic Centre to Airport is being retained and the other service which was heavily patronised during the world cup is being expanded to cover the entire city bowl and is set to recommence in September.
