'Oyster card' system to be rolled out for all rail journeys

Rail passengers could soon be able to pre-pay for journeys all over the country using "smart cards".

It will be similar to the Oyster card system used in London, which allows people to swipe in and out of stations without having to buy a new ticket.

The Government has announced the new ticketing system in response to Sir Roy McNulty's report on rail reform, which recommended changes to ticket office hours and staffing.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening told the Commons that changes would save taxpayers money, cut "inflation-busting" fare rises and improve passengers' journeys.

She said: "It's time to bring fares out of the 1970s and into the 21st century.

"Working with industry, we will roll out smart ticketing across England and Wales and also across different operators, increasing convenience for passengers."

Labour, however, accused her of failing to "stand up to vested interests on behalf of passengers".
