The Gotthard Railway Vol: 1. 1871 - 1909

Post by John Ashworth »

A new book by FOTR Forum member Malcolm Hardy-Randall. Malcolm is recovering well from his illness and says, "I am still a bit wobbly on the pins, no it is not whisky, and have problems using the right arm but regular physio and exercise is getting me there"!
Malcom wrote:The Gotthard Railway Vol: 1. 1871 - 1909

This book is a rewritten and very much expanded version of the Gotthardbahn section of my book ‘The History of the Gotthard Railway’ published in 1997. The rewrite has allowed me to provide far more detail on this fantastic railway than was possible in the old book. ‘The Gotthard Railway, 1871 - 1909’ is presented in PPC gloss laminated hardback printed form with 300 size A4 pages, covering rolling-stock, stations, bridges, construction equipment and track-plans.

There are 375 illustrations including maps & drawings of which 20 are in full colour.

The book begins with descriptive text of the planning of the railway, its construction and the opening of the route to
traffic. Then the locomotives, from the diminutive 0-4-0 that started the service up to the powerful 2-8-0 Maffei built
freight engines, are described in text and shown in black and white pictures as are the passenger and baggage coaches.

The freight wagons are described in text only as no photographs of the various wagon types remain in existence.
Full lists of specifications of all rolling stock is included giving a total history of any renumbering or modification
up to the period of the nationalisation of the company in 1909. This is followed by line drawings of all major bridges,
stations, locomotives, coaches and freight stock, all of which have been redrawn by hand to overcome variations in scale & quality after which they were digitally scanned. The final section covers maps of the route.
